By that time, the "dog show bug" had really biten . We had started conformation and obedience training classes in the late 50's and joined Western Reserve Kennel Club in 1960.
I was Trophy Chair, Board of Directors, Recording and Corresponding secretaries for WRKC and Bob was also a Board member, Match Chair, Chief Ring Steward , and Show Chair. He also was approved by the AKC as a licensed professional handler.
One of the many dogs he handled was a lovely Bernese Mountain Dog, Liesel VomBreiterweg. Liesel was a typical Berner - loved everyone, 2 legged or 4 footed. He finished her American and Canadian Championship before she was a year old.
In 1978, I met Penny Parliman at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show and I told her how much we liked the breed and that we would really love to have one to show. 18 months later, we recieved a call from Penny saying she had a nice puppy and would I be interested? She sent a picture of the cutest puppy ever (what Berner pup isn't?). We said "send puppy". That's how we got Pace. |

The celebrated Best in Show.Berner |
Am. Can. CH. SHERSAN'S CHANGE O' PACE V. HALIDOM, C.D. |
Pace was a cute puppy who managed to go through every ugly growth pattern. We finally took him in the ring at the age of two and he wasn't ready then. He finished at two and a half years old. He got a group three at the age of three and we decided to do some obedience. He earned his C.D. that summer-all outside shows during a very hot summer. Pace won his first best in show in June 1984. In the next eighteen months he won nineteen American Best in Shows, one Canadian Best and one National Specialty. He had 56 group firsts, 34 group seconds 25 group thirds, and 21 group fourths. He was the top winning Berner in America in 1984, 1985, and 1986 and top in Canada in 1985. He was also the only Berner to ever place twice in the Group at Westminster. |
